Progress Report on the Past 12 Months of the Troop
Key Issues to Address at this meeting:
Formation of Cub Scout Pack 112 - Most Successful Troops have a Cub Scout Pack. This arrangement allows the troops to have a supply of good new scouts and trained leaders. There has been a great deal of interest at St. John into forming a Cub Scout Pack.
Sacred Heart Joint Sponsorship of Troop and/or Cub Pack - On a variety of community involvement issues St. John Lutheran Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church have worked well together for many years. The Catholic Church has had a deep interest in scouting for a long time and has recently freed up space with the departure of Cities in Schools from their rectory. More scout troops on our side of town would hurt existing units, some feel there are already too many on Griffin's southside. Joint sponsorship is one way to possible attract more scouts, acquire space for our growing program and meet the needs of our scouts. If we move to joint sponsorship however we must tackle new issues such as where to meet, how to carry out activities so that we could be a part of both sponsors etc. It should be noted that St. John is an excellent sponsor. We have had a very positive relationship with our current sole sponsor with no problems.
Troop Equipment Needs - Recent growth in our troop has strained our capacity a good bit. Moreover we have two trailers both in need of extensive repairs. At times our scouts have not been the best stewards of our current equipment and we are faced with increased repair costs to damaged and misused equipment. Additional tents and cooking equipment also need to be obtained. Finally our troop flag which is over 25 years old is falling apart and in need of replacement.
Proper Uniforming, the Perfect Christmas Gift - Many of our scouts lack a uniform and those that do have them often attend meetings and campouts without their scout handbook or uniform. Our goal is to be a 100% Uniformed troop in 1995.
Dues for 1995 - This past year our dues were $40.00 a year which included insurance, the $7.00 scout registration fee, Boy's Life as well as awards and troop equipment. We remain one of the lowest cost troops in the county. Some scouts who joined late in the year paid their registration fee at the school sign up nights (many through 1996). These payments can be deducted from the Troop dues which are $40.00 a year or $4.00 a month. We will explain this and set our troop dues level for 1995. Our troop had a January 31st registration deadline. We want everyone to be able to afford scouting and can help with financial hardships.
Fund Raising Options for the Troop - With equipment needs and to ease the burden of the costs associated with the troop we must consider fundraising as a way to pay for some campouts and to operate the troop.
Scout Behavior at Campouts & Meetings - Roughhouse is common among scouts and a certain level is expected but the problem has increased recently. Some scouts go on campouts with 8" long knives rather than the regular pocket knives we allow scouts to have after they have earned their tottin chip. Scouts also have left the church a mess and damaged both troop & personal equipment through pranks and playing which gets out of hand. Personal vehicles used to transport scouts on camping trips have been left a mess. The leaders who volunteer their time need help in getting the scouts under control.
The Need for total family involvement in the Troop - There is a "Help Wanted" sign above our troop all the time. On our last campout we stuffed four vans full of scouts and literally did not have room for even one more person. More help is needed from all of our families if we are to have the best program we can. We also need to confirm our adult leaders for next year.
The Troop Calendar and Plan for 1995 - Last Week in the mail you should have received our troop calendar through January 1995. We have two additions to that calendar. On Thanksgiving Morning Nov. 24th our troop along with Troop 1 and several churches are going to distribute some 500 meals to the needy in Griffin. Besides our troop donating a bunch of Jello for the event we need people that morning to help drive and distribute the food. Our Committee Chairman Brice Beesley will explain this. Also on Thursday December 1st the Chamber of Commerce has asked Troop 12 to help out at the old Kroger / JC Penny Parking Lot. Scouts should be in uniform and bring a flashlight. We will assist in lining up the floats and getting people to their floats. We will also march in the parade near the back after everyone gets underway. For 1995 we can certainly use input on places to go and activities and programs for the meetings. We will also go over our Summer Camp Dates and the USS Alabama Battleship trip. &The December Roundtable has been moved to the 8th.
Advancement Goals for scouts. - A Court of Honor and Christmas Party is planned for December 12th. Today we are passing out scout advancement reports and are planning to initiate two Merit Badges for our older scouts to work on. Family Life & Personal Management.
